School to Work

Student’s Name: Paris Riley

Parent: Angie Riley

High School: Kokomo High School senior

Career Plans: Early Childhood Education

KACC Instructor: Mr. Mike Miller, Strategic Marketing

Internship Placement: Jefferson Manor, 603 Saint Joseph Dr., Kokomo, IN 46902

Supervisor: Bill Calhoun, Executive Director

Paris Riley’s thoughts:

“I became interested in working at Jefferson Manor because one of my friends had worked there and said it was a good place to work. I started working in the kitchen as part of the Wait Staff, but now I serve as a Resident Assistant. After training for two months, I began doing jobs, such as passing out meds, assisting with showers and giving breathing treatments. At first, I was nervous about the medications, but now I am comfortable in that job. My [Kokomo Area] Career Center class, [Strategic Marketing,] taught me about many situations that could happen on the job. Jefferson Manor definitely is preparing me for the future because I have learned so many ‘people’ skills, as well as patience.”

Bill Calhoun’s comments:

“Jefferson Manor is a senior, independent and assisted living facility. We are private pay, but Veterans and surviving spouses can receive assistance to live here. I think the [Kokomo Area] Career Center is beneficial for the high school students because it gives them opportunities to work extra hours during the school day. These career center students seem more responsible and better educated about how to deal with adults. I usually don’t assign the job of Resident Support Staff to a high school student, but Paris has been an exceptional employee. She has earned the promotion. Paris is responsible for medication management, helping with stand-by bathing assistance, preparing patients for bed, mobility transport, helping with dining, delivering meals to apartments, answering questions and, occasionally, handing an emergency. Paris is very dependable.”

This is one in a weekly series featuring a student and an employer involved in the Kokomo Area Career Center’s School-to-Work program. Any employer or student interested in the School-to-Work program should call James Stradling, KACC Director, at 765-455-8021.
