Hannah Harrison, Gabi Hartley and Maci Mendenhall’s thoughts:

“We were chosen by Ms. Wetekamp for this placement, and our internships are on different days of the week. Some of our scheduled work times run into the evening. At first, we observed. That experience gave us confidence, while we also learned what we wanted to study in college. Our jobs at the Indiana Health Center include disinfecting, applying sealants (which protect teeth from cavities) and taking patients’ blood pressure. Once we became acquainted and knew all the people in the office, the job became much easier. Because of our work at the Kokomo Area Career Center, we will have a head start when we enter college to pursue our dental careers.”

Dr. Jerra Sharp’s comments:

“At Indiana Health Center, we help many patients with low incomes. We do limited procedures at a low cost, but we take all insurances, as well. The dental students from the Kokomo Area Career Center have been very excited and eager to learn. As they have become more comfortable in the office, they have been included in the procedures. These career center students seem to have more initiative than our college students. The skills these students have been learning include: how and what to clean, how to assist in dental procedures, how to understand the different types of fillings and instruments, how to sterilize, how to chart a tooth and how to deal with children. This experience at the Indiana Health Center should be beneficial to these Kokomo Area Career Center students since they are receiving hands-on dental work, which should streamline their college work while saving their families time and money.”
