INDIANAPOLIS — Western Middle School student Thomas Gatewood placed second in the Indiana Geographic Bee held in April.
Trinity Lutheran School eighth grader Sean Ives, Crown Point, took top honors for the second year in a row. He will represent Indiana at the National Geographic Bee from Monday to Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
Gatewood is a seventh grader at WMS. Benjamin Foley, a seventh grader at Tri-North Middle School in Bloomington, placed third.
One hundred students in fourth through eighth grade qualified for this year’s state Geographic Bee. The top 10 contestants from a preliminary round faced off in the final round, during which competitors were eliminated after two incorrect answers.
The National Geographic Bee is organized by the National Geographic Society. This year’s state sponsors are Google and Plum Creek. The state bee is organized by Geography Educators Network of Indiana, based at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
