Tenth grader Rachel Hafley was the first student from Taylor High School to win the American Legion Americanism and Government Test state-level competition.
Any high school student can take the test, which includes questions about the flag, the state, county and federal government offices and an essay question, which was “What caused the government shutdown, and what were the effects of it?” this year. Two students from each grade level are named the winners, with county-level winners receiving a $50 gift card from the American Legion and state-level winners receiving a $1,000 scholarship.
In addition to Hafley’s state award, THS students Lexi Davis, Taylor Elmore, Fred Kim and Conner Morris also received county finalist awards.
THS teacher Don Bennett facilitates the program in his social studies classroom.
