After a successful run on the festival circuit over the past few months, the big day is finally here for the documentary “The Case Against 8.” The award-winning film is set to have its primetime premiere at 9 p.m. Monday on HBO East. The movie was co-directed by Ryan White and Kokomo native Ben Cotner.

“[The film is a] behind-the-scenes look inside the historic case to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage,” stated a portion of a press release from the filmmakers. “The high-profile trial first makes headlines with the unlikely pairing of Ted Olson and David Boies, political foes who last faced off as opposing attorneys in Bush v. Gore. The film also follows the plaintiffs, two gay couples who find their families at the center of the same-sex marriage controversy. Five years in the making, this is the story of how they took the first federal marriage equality lawsuit to the U.S. Supreme Court.”

The film holds a “Fresh” rating on popular movie review website Rotten Tomatoes, with 88 percent approval from the 17 professional reviews compiled so far. In addition to winning the Directing Award: U.S. Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, the film has also been declared The Audience Award Winner at the South by Southwest Film Festival, Best Documentary at the Vail Film Festival, Audience Award and Documentary winner at the Ashland Film Festival, Best Documentary Feature and Audience Award winner at the RiverRun International Film Festival, winner of the Nashville Film Festival and Juried Prize Winner at the Berkshire International Film Festival, among others.
