This week's best bets

Kokomo Tribune

---- — 1) Country for a cause

Support slain soldier James Vester at a benefit concert featuring Indiana's own Walker County at 7 p.m. Saturday at Rhum Academy of Music.

Walker County is a family band from Sulfur Springs. Eighteen-year-old Ivy Dene and 15-year-old Sophie Dawn bring soulfulness with an underlying tone of southern rock and traditional country to the stage.

Proceeds from Saturday's performance will help Jamie Vester set up a scholarship to honor her late husband who was killed in an attempted robbery shooting in Indianapolis in December.

2) Sport some green

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day early at First Friday in downtown Kokomo from 5:30 to 9 p.m. tonight.

The local Homebrew Club will offer beer tastings at LeaderOne Financial. Piper Hope Oaks will play the bagpipes at Kokomo-Howard County Public Library. Sol House will host its first-ever open mic night featuring musicians, magicians, poets and even some Irish jig music.

More than 20 businesses are participating in this month's festivities.

3) Bond with your son

Moms take your sons out for a night they won't forget. Join other mommy-son pairs at the Mom and Son Carnival at Celebrations Banquet Facility from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight.

There will be a buffet dinner with fair foods, games of skill, Hot Wheels racing and photo opportunities. The cost is $30 per couple.
