Bluegrass kind of a weekend

Get your fill of the down-home bluegrass sound at the second annual Winding Creek Bluegrass Festival.

Taking the stage to jam throughout the three-day event will be nine local and national bands. After a successful first year, organizers say they’ve kicked things up a notch this year and snagged some really great bands. Performing will be Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Audie Blaylock & Redline, Goldwing Express, Vernon McIntyre’s Appalachian Grass, Branded Bluegrass, Cornfields and Crossroads, Kenny Stinson & Perfect Tym’n and Bahler-Graber Band. Shew, [friday] is exhausted from just listing the bands.

The festival kicks off today from 2 to 11 p.m. and continues 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

It’ll all go down at Koh-Koh-Mah and Foster Living History Encampment, 100 S. 1000 West. Need more info?

Take your pooch swimming

Sunday, Kokomo Beach is going to the dogs. Literally.

The aquatic center will open its doors to four-legged visitors for the annual Pooches in the Pool Day. Your pooch can take a dip in the pool and feel the freedom of being off the leash inside the gates.

For $5 per dog, pets can swim for two hours. Organizers can only allow one dog per person, and owners will not be allowed to swim.

Of course, the Kokomo Parks & Recreation Department will again offer “oops” bags and disinfectant in case of accidents.

The pool will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, but only to dogs. There’s no public swimming, and this event traditionally marks the end of the pool’s season.

For more info, call the parks department at 765-456-7275.

Roar into the weekend at the track

While [friday] doesn’t know much about racing, we know a party when we see one. And this weekend’s first running of the Sprint Car Smackdown and Thunder Car Showdown at the Kokomo Speedway looks like a good time.
