Ladies, embrace your beauty

There was a time in my life when I hated everything about my body, and when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING.

I even hated the sound of my voice, especially after a group of guys at my high school made fun of it for being too low and monotone.

So when I came across a Detroit Free Press contest called Love Your Body, I couldn’t help but smile. The concept was simple but powerful.

“We asked metro Detroit women to tell us what they love about their bodies because we know women tend to concentrate on what they dislike about themselves instead of what they like,” the newspaper wrote. “In all, 270 women responded to our question: Tell us what part of your body you love and why you find it so fabulous. The stories were thoughtful and heartfelt and a little disarming. So many stories were so moving…”

Forty-three-year-old Omesha Pettway-Jones wrote that she loves her stretch marks because they represent a dream come true.

She had been told she’d never be able to have a child, but she carried a baby boy to full term and delivered him without complications. Her stretch marks are a testament to the goodness of God, she wrote.

Jennifer McQuillan, 39, loves the freckles and lines on her face, especially the crease between her eyes.

“My face is my favorite body part because each and every line, crevice, scar, freckle, and mark speaks volumes about the story of my life,” she wrote in the Detroit Free Press contest “ ... My face reflects my creativity, tenacity, and enthusiasm for all that life has taught me these last four decades. Each wrinkle bears witness to the extraordinary journey of my life.”

I have to agree with McQuillan. These days, my face is my favorite part of my body. Though I don’t have all the creases, crevices and marks that McQuillan does at 39 (I do have the crease between the eyes), my face is a constant connection to almost my entire family.
