Home on a tree-lined street

Silk Stocking residence has a long history

While Sharon and Bill Carter were remodeling their home in the Silk Stocking District, they learned many interesting things about the house.

The couple believes the two-story structure, constructed in 1875 on Walnut Street, might have been the first residence built in the neighborhood.

A porch wraps around the front of the house, while well-maintained flower beds surround it.

Located at ground level on a tree in the yard is a door for squirrels, a personal touch by Bill.

It’s fake, of course.

When the couple moved to Kokomo from New Orleans with their three young children in 1978, it was love at first sight when they saw the house.

After 36 years with the U.S. Air Force, Bill retired and was transferred to the Grissom Air Base, and the couple wanted a big house in town.

“I had been raised out in the county and always liked the idea of living in town,” Sharon said. “I wanted to live on a tree-lined street.”

Sharon explained they arrived in Kokomo on a Friday night and drove down Walnut Street to look at the house, which was formerly owned by Bill and Dorothy Menges.

“I fell in love with it,” she said. “I fell in love with the street. It was something that I always dreamed of.”
