Hingst joins state swim

Western’s Andrews finishes career with five school records

By TRIBUNE SPORTS STAFF

The field of swimmers for the IHSAA’s 34th Annual Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals has been filled by way of at-large invitations and Kokomo junior Katie Hingst will be among those vying for individual honors Friday and Saturday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Hingst left Saturday’s Carmel Sectional in limbo after failing to win or swim the state-cut time standards in either of her individual events, the 200- and 500-yard freestyle.

Her time of 5:13.76 in the 500 freestyle, though, was good enough to get a call-back. Hingst will be the 17th-fastest girl entered in the 500 lineup.

Last season Hingst placed statewide in the top 12 of both the 200 and the 500 free but has been hampered this postseason by illness.

Hingst’s time of 1:57.89 in the 200 freestyle failed to receive a call-back. The final at-large spot went to Megan Schwartzkopf of Hamilton Southeastern with a time of 1:57.12.

Western senior Rae Andrews didn’t get any good news Sunday.

Andrews was fourth Saturday at Carmel in the 100-yard breaststroke, lowering her school-record to 1:08.72, but the final at-large berth in that event was claimed by Mackenzie Powell of Lawrence Central in 1:08.44.

Also on Saturday, in the 200 individual medley Andrews swam a time of 2:13.66 to finish fifth. Roncalli’s Alexa Eberg earned the last call-back in that event with a 2:12.12.

Andrews’ career as a Panther ends with a total of five school records, including the breaststroke, the IM and all three relays.
