Local squads break records at Fort Wayne

By TRIBUNE SPORTS STAFF

FORT WAYNE — Kokomo’s girls golf team shattered the recently set school record for 18 holes Thursday, putting a 306 on the board to win the Fort Wayne Snider at Noble Hawk G.C. The Kats shaved eight strokes off the record they set Tuesday and needed every stroke to beat DeKalb, which posted a 307 to finish second in the 18-team invite. Northwestern set its own school record with a 310 for third. Richmond was well behind in fourth (332).

“They were real excited just shooting under a 310 considering their goal was to beat last year’s school record,” Kokomo coach Andy Carpenter said. “They broke it, and they broke the new school record so soon they were very excited about it.”

Ali Linville carded a one-over 70 and was the second medalist. Kristi Cardwell shot 71 and was fourth, Mary Kate Thatcher shot 77 and Kylie Kern shot 88.

“It was very comforting to see the girls come through,” Carpenter said. “Mary Kate came through really well. [It was] a rain-soaked course, it was pretty much flooded up there, there was standing water everywhere and the girls did a good job of keeping within their game and working hard at it.”

For the Tigers, Sara Poppas led with a 71 to take fifth individually. Alyssa McClure shot 75, Laura Roseberry shot 79 and Rachael Galbraith shot 85.

Northwestern coach Mary Clem liked how all of her players performed in the less-than-ideal conditions, and she was pleased to come away with the school record.

“We were ready to break the school record [Wednesday in the New Castle Invitational] at Westwood Country Club, but we were rained out. We were disappointed,” Clem said. “To come back [Thursday] and play even better and break the record was great.”

Kokomo and Northwestern play in the Western Invitational Saturday at Chippendale.
