PREP ROUNDUP: Taylor tops Carroll in tennis

Northwestern whips Oak Hill in boys soccer

Strong doubles play helped Taylor down visiting Carroll 4-1 in a boys tennis match Monday.

Matt Petty and Reomey Northington rolled to a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles and Tim Simmons and Cody Hinton took a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles.

“One doubles got us a real quick first point. I thought that was important because singles, all up and down, seemed to be really close,” Taylor coach Dave Wise said. “Two doubles then came through and got the second point so then we just had to wait.”

In the singles matches, Geoff Stimler won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 and Matt Brankle won 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 for the Titans’ third and fourth points.

“Matt Brankle lost his first three games, and then over the rest of his match he only lost a total of five games. After those first three games, he played really well,” Wise said.

Carroll’s point came at No. 3 singles where Kyle Seward dropped a 5-7 decision in the first, took a 6-3 win in the second set and then claimed a 10-4 win in a super tiebreaker.

Taylor (5-6) visits Northwestern today.

Marion 5, Northwestern 0

The North Central Conference Giants proved too tough for the Purple Tigers.

The No. 1 doubles team of Ben-Marvin Egel and Bryan Beachy had one of Northwestern’s better showings. Egel and Beachy dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision.

Northwestern (3-7) hosts Taylor today.

Maconaquah 4, Cass 1

The Braves swept the singles matches to fuel their 4-1 win in Mid-Indiana Conference play. Jeremy Graber won 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1, Sam Dick won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Austin Hudson dropped just four games at No. 3.

Also for the Braves, Christian Fulton and Dakota Harts took a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

“It was a nice win,” Mac coach Dan Fulton said. “We seem to be playing well at the right time here. Lewis Cass is a talented team and our guys just came out and just played really well. I am really proud of the way they played.”

The Kings picked up their point at No. 2 doubles where Dylan Mund and John Zigler rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Maconaquah (10-3, 5-1 MIC) hosts rival Peru today.

BOYS SOCCER

Northwestern 7, Oak Hill 3

Jimmy Corcoran and Peter Caven combined for five goals and three assists to power the Purple Tigers past the visiting Golden Eagles.

“Oak Hill always bring a good team over. I thought it was going to be a really even match, but we got off to a good start. We were up 4-1 in the first half and then we got the first goal in the second half, then traded goals with them from there,” Northwestern coach Jim Corcoran said.

Jimmy Corcoran had three goals and an assist and Caven recorded two goals and two assists. Also for the winners, John McCormick and Nate Silvey scored a goal apiece, Nolan Sanders dished two assists and ’keeper Graham Dennis made a dozen saves.

“I thought my team looked very quick up front and throughout the midfield, winning the ball, and although we gave up three goals, I thought the defense played rock-solid again,” Jim Corcoran said.

Northwestern (9-4) hosts Tri-Central on Thursday.

Rochester 2, Maconaquah 1

Corey Minard scored the Braves’ goal, off an assist from Jose Blanco. ’Keeper Jon Zipperian made six saves.

“We just couldn’t get a second goal,” Mac coach Doug Howlette said. “We had shot after shot from all sorts of different people. We tried everything we could, it just wasn’t going to go for us.

“Corey Minard, our goal-scorer, was our MVP. He played a great game.”

Maconaquah visits Caston today.

GIRLS SOCCER

Taylor 3, Tipton 1

Avery Gotshall and Amber Doehrman each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Titans past the visiting Blue Devils. Hannah Hawkins scored the Center crew’s other goal.

“We started out kind of slow — [the Blue Devils] scored their goal the first two minutes of the match and had us concerned a little bit. But, the girls got organized and kept pressing on,” Taylor coach John Piotrowicz said. “All three of our goals came in the second half. It was nice to see us continue to fight and pick up their play. It was fun to watch.”

Taylor ’keeper Kylie Weeks recorded eight saves and Rebecca Smith offered a defensive spark.

“Rebecca has been fighting through an injury. She really stepped up [Monday] and played well for us defensively,” Piotrowicz said.

Taylor (5-3) hosts Oak Hill on Wednesday.

Western 6, Tri-Central 0

Brooke Jackson scored a pair of goals and Abi Banan, Brittney Trueblood, Lacey Roe and Hannah Peterson added a score apiece in the Panthers’ road win. Elise Briscoe offered an assist.

“It was a very nice team effort,” Western coach Sarah Brichford said. “We’ve been working hard on finishing and [Monday] it paid off.”

Western (2-7-1) visits Oak Hill on Thursday.

McCutcheon 3, Kokomo 2

The Wildkats put forth a good effort, but fell just short of a road win.

“I was really pleased with the way we played. I thought we played tough and aggressive and I thought we passed the ball well,” Kokomo coach Myles Geary said. “Anytime you come over to play a Lafayette team, you have to expect a really good game, and I really liked the way we responded to their play.”

Casey Connor recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Red and Blue. Maddie Waltemath scored the goal, Brittney Hildebrand chipped in an assist and ’keeper Kristen Clason recorded 22 saves.

“I was happy with the girls’ effort. The whole team just played really big. Our seniors looked sharp, the bench came on and did a great job. I am really excited about where we’re heading,” Geary said.

Kokomo (4-5) visits Marion today for a North Central Conference game. Geary noted the Giants are undefeated in league play.

Sheridan 2, Eastern 1

The Blackhawks grabbed the lead early and never let go against the Comets in a match at Greentown.

“We’ve struggled in the first 10 to 15 minutes of matches, and the first couple minutes Sheridan was able to capitalize on that,” Eastern coach Kevin Duggins said. “They led 1-0 until they scored with probably 20 minutes left, and we scored under the last minute. It was a great game.”

Rachael Lindgren scored the Comets’ goal. Courtney Jones recorded six saves between the pipes.

Eastern (5-5) plays in Tipton’s tourney Saturday.
