Howard Co. needs Lake’s experience
I first met Howard County treasurer candidate Martha Lake several years ago when she was the administrative assistant for county Commissioner James Ferguson with the Comprehensive Employment Training Act (CETA) program in Howard County. As Howard County Extension director and agricultural agent, my office cooperated with CETA. Martha helped us provide work for two people. These people were helpful in our 4-H and home economics programs. Martha and the CETA program helped many Howard County people through tough times.
As a Howard County councilman in 1999, I worked with Commissioner Dave Griffey in the remodeling and furnishing of the Howard County Administration Center. We depended on then Auditor Martha Lake to get a consensus from the other officeholders on all colors and styles of floors, walls and furniture. Martha and her advisers came up with recommendations that were accepted and have been praised by many visitors.
While history is important, we also need to listen to current experience and successes to determine a person’s quality for any position. Martha worked as a deputy in the treasurer’s office before becoming auditor in 1997, so she knows about those unexpected circumstances that are even more numerous under the latest tax legislation. 2008 state legislation is still being interpreted and Martha’s experience would be good for all of us.
Term limits only allow someone to serve eight consecutive years as the auditor or treasurer, so it is important now that we elect Martha Lake to serve another four years as our treasurer. Experience will be so important to face all the changes that have and will be made in county government, so I hope you will join me in keeping Martha Lake as our Howard County treasurer.

John Birch Society returning to town?
Many people have heard of The John Birch Society, most perhaps do not know its agenda. Simply stated, its motto: “Less government, more responsibility [ours] and with God’s help, a better world.” Its strategy is education and the only weapon is truth.
I am not an official spokesman for the Society. I can speak from my own experiences as a chapter leader. Several chapters have started then collapsed. Had people been aware how the Society is needed, membership would be easy to gain.
The Society is in the forefront of stopping any efforts to Sovietize America. Yes we have insiders who would like to see the U.S. give up its guaranteed freedoms as written in the Constitution. NAU, NAFTA and the highway from Mexico across America to Canada are all part of the insiders’ plans. When you control the economy, you have political control.
Prior to the present issues, our chapter formed ad hoc committees, people that support a program but do not choose to join the Society or donate to it. MOTORED, SLYP, GET US OUT were some of the committee names. Movement to restore decency, support you local police, Get U.S. out of the United Nations and the United Nations our of the U.S. From time to time, speakers with interesting stories to tell would be sponsored.
Evelyn Brown, that joined the Community Party because she thought it was to help African Americans, when she reported to the FBI, it asked her to stay and report its activities. Her book, “I Testify,” was published.
Antony Bryant, that forced an aircraft to Cuba, robbing the passengers on the way, thinking Castro would crown him for his daring. His book, “Hijack,” details his observations during the stay in Cuba. He came to Kokomo and was interviewed by the Dick and Charley show.
I hear there is a new chapter in town. I will help with any calls for information. The story is far from being told.
