Front-page articles should spark chats

I read the article about Tipton putting up the Ten Commandments. It was a good story. Many would say it was a display and summary of a Christian act. I would tend to agree.

The ironic part the front page of the Kokomo Tribune was that the article directly below it highlighted Cosmopolitan magazine.

I don’t read Cosmopolitan, but the word “Christian” jumped out at me in the article. There is a good lesson to learned here, I think. Exalting a magazine like this is far from what I think a follower of Jesus Christ would do.

I Googled the Web site and the following are some of the words I read: “The Blended Orgasm,” “Hot Guys,” “Celebs and Gossip,” “Are You a Hot Challenge?” “Boy Toys.”

In addition, it had several rotating pictures of men and women laying in intimate positions with nothing much on.

All of us are so subtly tricked into thinking that Christian means so many different things. My heart goes out to all young people who are attacked on all media fronts. Radio, music, magazines, television, movies and newspapers will all be gone some day. May you run to the one place where you will find the truth.

My thanks to the Kokomo Tribune for putting these two articles together to provide a talking point for us to speak to our children about these things. May we all better understand the dramatic blurring of the lines each one of us are guilty of – including myself.

A step in right direction for city

On Nov. 6, we are going to elect new leadership in Kokomo. After educating myself on the issues concerning the growth, prosperity and integrity of our city, I’m convinced Greg Goodnight is the man for the job. Greg is a proven leader and will bring people of our city together.

It is imperative that Kokomo move forward now more than ever. As we witness the departure of many good-paying jobs, at alarming rates, it is obvious need a mayor with a sound economic plan, whose priorities lie first with the citizens of Kokomo.

I know Greg is that man. I challenge everyone to educate themselves on the issues that will significantly influence the future of our city. I think you will reach the same conclusion.

A vote for Greg on Nov. 6 will be a vote for ensuring Kokomo’s prosperous future.

City requires 10 hauling trash

Not too long ago I had heard Greg Goodnight’s mayoral opponent talking about the City of Kokomo’s trash system. I do know that trash removal is a very touchy subject for Kokomo right now because of the new automated system.

I just so happen to be one of the city’s trash-packer operators, so, believe me, I know from firsthand experience!

However, Mr. Goodnight’s opponent was saying that before, when we were throwing trash by hand, that it took 10 people to do so, and now it only takes five to get the job done. Well, I would like to inform the citizens of Kokomo, it does only take five operators to dump the city totes.

What about the refuse that people do not put in those totes? It does not get picked up on its own.

We have two rear-load trucks that are manned by two operators each. With those trucks, we pick up large items such as couches, mattresses, tables, desks, etc. Things that cannot fit in our trash totes. Also, we have two clamshell-type trucks that pick up large, heavy items of trash and refuse. Each of these trucks have one operator a piece.

If we did not have these trucks and operators, there would be about 10 to 12 tons of trash per day laying on the streets and in the alleys!

It used to be all one-manned packers until it was found to be unsafe, and by the growth of the city of Kokomo, more refuse is to be collected. That is why we went to the two-manned packers, which took truck drivers and laborers away from their duties to run the extra trucks needed for refuse! Now, by going to the automated system, those truck drivers and laborers can perform their much-needed duties that we as citizens have had to go without for so long.

So, when I hear this mayoral candidate saying that we should eliminate the other trash operator jobs, I wonder what our city would look like without them! I would sure hate to see that sight, and I am pretty sure every other taxpaying citizen would too.

In my opinion, I think that the streets and the alleys are cleaner than ever, and for a mayoral candidate saying they want to create more good jobs in Kokomo, why do we have to eliminate some first?
