Oct. 3, 2013: Letters to the editor

Curbside recycling:‘A step backward’

I’ve been recycling ever since bins were installed in different locations around Kokomo. No matter where I drive, I drive past or near one of the bins. I keep my recyclables in my garage until I have what I believe is enough to take to the bin. Then, when I’m going to run other errands, I take my recyclables and drop them off.

No one pays me for my gas or time it takes to drop them off, and that’s fine with me. I am saving the city money by not having to pay for more landfill space or adding me to a route for pickup of my recyclables at my curb.

And don’t forget buying and maintaining the totes, at a cost of $800,000 to $1 million, which will add to street clutter before, on and after pickup days, with more trash being dropped on the street.

Many people in Kokomo use the current bins. At the end of any given week, the bins around town are full from other people saving the city money by recycling.

I read about a lot of dollars planned for a curbside recycling program. There was no mention of the added cost for adding to the existing routes and manpower to handle the extra workload.

Kokomo Recycle plans to spend $2 million to upgrade its facility. Where is that money coming from? Will residents eventually be charged a fee?

I’d be happy if Kokomo Recycle was to become a regional recycling center and add 16 jobs. Just please don’t do it on the backs of the taxpayers. After being annexed into the city, my taxes nearly doubled. Call it a fee if you like (it’s a tax), but it will add to my monthly expenses and, as I stated, I am already helping save the city money by utilizing the already paid for and existing recycling bins.
