What if gov’t won’t protect your family?
I just read Rob Burgess’ column of a few days ago online. He is somewhat correct about not being able to confront the federal government if it decides to impose dictatorial powers in the United States.
What he is forgetting is that the government would have seriously decayed if that were to happen, and there would also be a large contingency of our armed forces unwilling to shoot or make war on their fellow citizens.
What is actually more likely is the need for firearms in the event of some crisis, like a food shortage or economic collapse, that creates widespread anarchy. Hurricanes or storms like Sandy and Katrina also set up the conditions for looting and widespread lawlessness.
Remember the LA riots of 1992, when Rodney King was a household name? Hundreds of businesses were burned and looted. The only businesses that survived were the ones whose owners were on their roofs with rifles and shotguns, many of these were of Chinese descent.
I read a story about one man who had stayed with his business protecting it. When the National Guard showed up, he thought all was well so he went home. When he returned the next morning, his business had been looted and burned.
The National Guard were just patrolling and moved on, and his business was not protected. During the time of the riots and the anarchy which accompanied them, the police did not come to the area. When the government can’t or won’t protect you, you must do it yourself.
If you didn’t provide your own protection and self-defense, you did not have any. Consider Christians in other parts of the world where their homes and churches are burned, and they cannot stop it because they are not allowed their own arms for protection. Egypt is a good example of where this is taking place right now.
I know gun control laws were enacted in the late 1800s. Their purpose was to keep the freed slaves from having firearms.
If 10 percent of freed slaves had been given a good rifle, the Ku Klux Klan would have been out of business. The arms in America keep lots of potential bad activity out of business. Arms in America have increased greatly in the last few years, yet firearm accidents and gun crime have continued to decline.
Every state and locality that has made it legal to carry a concealed weapon has seen significant reductions in criminal activity. England banned handguns in 1992 and just recently it has had to arm its police, “bobbies,” because there are so many guns in the hands of gang members and criminals showing up on the streets. Also if you shoot someone in your house in England, there is a good chance you will go to jail.
