April 22, 2014: Letters to the editor

Tipton incorporated earlier than known?

A Nickel Plate Trail sign was recently put up in the northwest corner of the Tipton County Courthouse lawn. The center circle wording states the town of Tipton was founded in 1833, which is eleven years before it really was.

Tipton County was formed in 1844, and the county seat was named in October of the same year. This mistake obviously passed the inspection of the mayor of the town and the commissioners of the county.

An email was sent by our own Chamber of Commerce announcing the placement of the new sign, with close-up pictures of the “history.”

It’s fitting that a sign with wrong information is placed on the lawn of the courthouse.

Support Short for Center Twp. Board

I am writing to endorse Mr. Charles Short for Center Township Advisory Board. As a 2009 graduate of Taylor High School, I had the opportunity to get to know Mr. Short and was always impressed by his professionalism, discipline and dedication to his many duties. Whether it was teaching world history or helping students secure scholarships, he always put forth strong dedication to help all students. I believe this kind of dedication for our youth is exactly what Center Township needs today.

As a teacher, Mr. Short always ensured that students were engaged in his history and English classes. While many students disliked his strong discipline, I found that it has helped me in my academic and work careers. While many teachers ignore students skipping class or not engaging in learning, Mr. Short refused to tolerate such nonsense. He felt that every student should be expected to work hard and have enough knowledge to be civically engaged as an adult. He was always willing to work with struggling students, whether it be in school work or with other life issues. This brand of tough love is increasingly rare in today’s educational world, as many educators fear the wrath of parents or administrators in maintaining strong discipline.
