Columnist proves Romney’s point
From opening to closing sentence, guest columnist Judy Dugan mischaracterizes and misapplies comments made by presidential candidate Mitt Romney. It is evident from the outset that she and her husband have no resemblance to those who have become dependent upon government. They have productively contributed to their own well-being, to federal spending programs, and to the well-being of others over the course of their lives. Even in retirement, the Dugans contribute through volunteerism. Conversely, there are others who expect their taxpaying neighbors to fund their food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, and often entertainment needs and wants.
Most astounding to me is that Ms. Dugan considers a low tax rate a federal entitlement. Keeping our own money that we earn or receive from investment proceeds is a government entitlement? Really? I think that Americans deserve to keep as much of their own resources and assets as possible and to do with them as they see fit.
In the end, Ms. Dugan proves the point of Mr. Romney’s observation. Given the tone of her column, I think that she intends to vote for Mr. Obama and there is nothing that the Romney campaign can do to sway her otherwise. Why should Mr. Romney squander valuable resources on vain attempts to reason with those who have already determined to maintain the status quo and oppose progress in this election?
