Pillars complex catches on fire

All residents were evacuated.

By TRIBUNE STAFF REPORTS

Kokomo firefighters responded to an apartment fire just before 3 a.m. Friday at The Pillars, 412 Pillars Place. No one was injured in the blaze.

The apartment complex, which currently has 23 residents, was evacuated for about an hour while firefighters were on scene.

Ted Brown, chief operating officer with Howard Regional Health System, said one apartment was a total loss.

The fire was contained to only one unit, however, and it was situated at the end of one wing. Crews were cleaning up smoke and water damage Friday morning.

The Pillars, a low-income housing complex for individuals with disabilities, is co-owned by the hospital.

No damage estimate was immediately available, and the Kokomo Fire Department did not release a possible cause of the fire Friday.
