Seniors to be honored

Baccalaureate service planned for Sunday

By DANIELLE RUSH
Tribune staff writer

All Howard County high school seniors are invited to attend a baccalaureate service at 6 p.m. Sunday at Oakbrook Community Church, 3409 S. Dixon Road.

The Kokomo Noontime Kiwanis club is sponsoring the event, which members hope will become an annual tradition, according to member Wayne Luttrell.

He said the idea came from the club’s spiritual aims committee.

“They thought it would be a great idea to try and see what kind of response we had from the graduating seniors,” he said.

Information was sent to every graduating senior in the public schools, Christian Heritage Academy and home schoolers.

Luttrell described the event as a non-denominational “service of worship and inspiration,” open to seniors, their families and teachers. It is open to the public and there is no admission charge.

Guest speaker will be Dr. Lauren Dungy-Poythress, director of maternal fetal medicine, Community Health Network of Indianapolis. She is sister to Colts coach Tony Dungy.

“We were really tickled we were able to get someone of her caliber,” Luttrell said.

He said Dungy-Poythress is a popular motivational speaker and has delivered many commencement addresses at both the high school and college level. He anticipates she will speak about the importance of faith in everyday life.

Luttrell hopes for a good community response to the event.

“If the response is good, we’ll try to do it again in the future.”
