Woman killed in hit-and-run crash

Police looking for pickup truck that hit woman on Vaile Avenue Friday

By MIKE FLETCHER
Tribune staff writer

Kokomo police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who struck and killed a 51-year-old woman riding a bicycle then fled the scene.

At 10:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of 1916 E. Vaile Ave. At the accident scene, according to Officer Troy Hintz, they found Karen Hamilton, of Kokomo, lying in the street.

She had been riding her bicycle west on Vaile Avenue when she was struck from the rear by a full-size, dark-colored pickup truck.

Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple blunt trauma, Howard County Coroner Brad Bray said Saturday.

A witness told police the truck hit the woman then drove away. The truck was last seen driving west on Vaile Avenue.

It is believed to have heavy front-end damage to the passenger side and may have windshield damage, Detective Orville Harness said. The truck also has a rear tail-light out or have damage unrelated to the accident, he added.

Anyone who may have information about the hit-and-run is encouraged to call Detective Harness or Officer Hintz at the Kokomo Police at (765) 459-5101, or the Kokomo Police Hotline at 456-7017. You may also qualify for a cash reward by calling Central Indiana Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS with your anonymous tip.
