UPDATE: Mo-ped driver in critical condition

Kokomo Police have identified the 42-year-old man seriously injured after his mo-ped collided with a van Saturday evening as Douglas Vaneta.

After further investigation, police learned Vaneta was traveling the wrong way on Union Street, going south on the one-way northbound street. He turned onto Defenbaugh Street running into the side of a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Ashley Ward, 26, Middleton. According to witnesses, he did not look before he crossed into Defenbaugh Street.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:50 p.m. Vaneta is listed in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Shortly after he was transported to Howard Regional Health System, he was transported by Lifeline helicopter to Methodist. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this accident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officers Troy Hintz or Orville Harness at (765) 459-5101 or the Kokomo Police Hotline at (765) 456-7017.
