Police investigate two unrelated shootings

Arrest anticipated in one of the investigations

By MIKE FLETCHER
Tribune staff writer

Kokomo police are investigating two shootings that took place early Thursday — one near Markland and Indiana avenues and one in the 1200 block of South Ohio Street.

No arrests have been made in either shooting and police do not believe they are related, Lt. Donald Whitehead said Thursday afternoon.

Police were first called at 1:42 a.m. to 1217 S. Ohio St., where a 17-year-old male told police that a man approached him from around the house armed with a handgun. The teen said the man called out a name that he didn’t recognize, then pointed a gun at him. The teen and a female neighbor who saw the two then struggled with the gunman briefly. The suspect then pointed the gun at both people, fired a shot in the air over their heads and ran, Whitehead said.

The teen suffered minor abrasions and bruises during the struggle, but was not seriously injured.

Whitehead said they have identified the suspect and anticipate an arrest soon.

At 2:58 a.m., officers received a second call of a shooting at Markland Avenue between Indiana and Wabash avenues, where a vehicle had been shot several times.

No injuries were reported.

Detectives said the shooting stemmed from an alteration at Tail-gators Bar & Grill on South Plate Street.

The incident remains under investigation and is not believed to be linked to the prior shooting.

Anyone with information concerning either shooting is urged to call the Kokomo Police Hotline at (765) 456-7017, or you may qualify for a cash reward by calling Central Indiana Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS with your anonymous tip.
