Peru — A 20-year-old Peru man is dead after a gunshot wound to the head.IN
Jacob A. Dwight died Tuesday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, according to the Miami County Sheriff Department.
The shooting occurred at a residence in the 1000 block of West Sixth Street just before 10:30 p.m. Monday.
David W. Adkins, 22, Peru, was arrested on charges in connection with the shooting, said Sheriff Sgt. Gary Glassburn.
Deputies say they found Dwight lying on a bed in a second-story bedroom, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Dwight was transported to Dukes Memorial Hospital by ambulance and then flown by airlifted to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Glassburn said Dwight was in the residence with Adkins, who police say was showing a .357-caliber handgun to others when it discharged, hitting Dwight in the head.
He said there were three people in the upstairs bedroom at the time of the shooting. Glassburn said Adkins’ parents were asleep at the time of the incident on the first floor of the residence.
Adkins was arrested and initially charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, causing serious bodily injury, as well as pointing a firearm.
When Dwight died, Glassburn said, the charges now stand as reckless homicide, pointing a firearm and possession of marijuana.
“We’ve had no problems with [Adkins] since he was a juvenile,” he said. “We’re still trying to determine what happened.”
The incident remains under investigation.
