51st UPDATE: News from snowstorm

Kokomo — EASTERN, SOUTHEASTERN SCHOOLS CLOSED THURSDAY: "Be safe, Comets!" Eastern Superintendent Tracy Caddell tweeted Wednesday afternoon.

CITY: SHOVEL WALKS, MOVE VEHICLES: The city of Kokomo urges residents to clear snow and ice from sidewalks around their property and remove illegally parked and abandoned vehicles. "Help make Kokomo safe for everyone," a press release said Wednesday. Vehicles that are not removed soon will be towed, the city warned.

WESTERN SCHOOLS CLOSED THURSDAY: As reported by the Kokomo sports staff.

KOKOMO SENIOR CENTER CLOSED THURSDAY: The senior center will remain closed because of a water main break.

PERU SCHOOLS CLOSED THURSDAY: Peru district makes decision, "due to road conditions for buses on county roads & sidewalk/bus stop condition," it said in Wednesday tweet.

TIPTON TRASH COLLECTION SUSPENDED: The city Street Department has suspended trash and recycling collections until Monday, Jan. 13. It will resume the normal collection schedule at that time.

HOWARD COUNTY CENTER TOWNSHIP OFFICE CLOSED: Trustee Jean Lushin has been forced to close the office Wednesday and likely Thursday due to a broken water pipe in the ceiling of the office.

TIPTON CLOSES EMERGENCY SHELTER: EMA Director Chuck Bell tells Tribune reporter Martin Slagter the emergency shelter at Tipton's Trinity Wesleyan Church, which aided 48 overnight guests Sunday, has closed and is on standby, if the need arises.

KOKOMO SENIOR CENTER CLOSED WEDNESDAY: The senior center will be closed Wednesday due to a water main break.

IVY TECH PUSHES BACK REGISTRATION DEADLINE: All Ivy Tech Community College campuses will allow students to continue to register for spring 2014 classes through Sunday, Jan. 19, due to extensive campus closures this week. The semester still will begin Monday, Jan. 13, but the college is giving students through the first week of classes to get registered.

ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL: No prenatal class Wednesday.
