---- — Taylor Community School Corp. has finalized its snow day make-up plan and will begin extending the school day on Monday.

From Monday through April 3, students will dismiss one hour later than normal. The Indiana Department of Education offered extending instructional hours as an option for making up class time canceled due to inclement weather.

“We want to get as much increased instruction time as we can now, versus tacking it on at the end of the school year, to help with preparation for the ISTEP and [End of Course Assessments],” said Taylor High School Principal Eric Hartman. “We understand there’s never going to be a perfect scenario with this. … This decision was made in the best interest of student learning.”

The start and dismissal times are as follows:

• Taylor middle school and high school – start at 7:45 a.m., dismiss at 3:37 p.m.

• Taylor Primary School – start at 8:15 a.m., dismiss at 4 p.m.

• Taylor Intermediate School – start at 8:30 a.m., dismiss at 4:20 p.m.

Taylor schools have been dismissing students 25 minutes early on Wednesdays this year for staff development, but starting next week that will no longer occur.

In the event of a two-hour delay between Monday and April 4, the one-hour extension would still take place. A free snack will be provided to kindergarten through sixth grade students during the extra hour of instruction to meet IDOE requirements. Middle school and high school students will spend an extra half hour in two classes at the end of the day on a rotating basis.

“We think this is a better situation than adding five or six minutes on the end of every period,” Hartman said.

The extended school days will allow Taylor to recover five of the nine days lost to cancellations. Taylor will be in session on Good Friday, April 18, to make up another day, and three more days of school will be added at the end of the year on May 29, May 30 and June 2 with graduation scheduled for June 13.
