---- — Forty local models will strut their stuff on the runway Saturday to raise awareness about heart disease and its impacts.

The sixth annual Go Red for Women Fashion Show kicks off at Celebrations Banquet & Conference Center at 2 p.m.

The models have chosen red outfits from eight different area boutiques and department stores that they will showcase on the runway.

Many of those shops and stores will have booths set up for people to browse through before the show. There will also be a silent auction featuring items from places like J. Edwards Fine Chocolates and Palmer’s Jewelry.

The event will feature a photo booth with props.

All money raised during the event will be donated to the American Heart Association.

Last year’s event brought in $7,300, so organizers are hoping to top that this year, said event co-chairwoman Shirley Dubois.

While they’re raising funds, they’ll also try to raise awareness, Dubois said.

After all, 23 women in Indiana die every day from heart disease and strokes. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the state and accounted for 13,388 deaths in 2010 alone.

There will be a short education program at the event to teach women how to take control of their heart health.

Dubois said they’ll learn about the importance of knowing their blood pressure and cholesterol numbers and about owning their lifestyle by quitting smoking, losing weight, eating better and exercising.

Experts will help women understand their risks, too.

“Some symptoms for women are different than they are for men,” she said.

Women might experience unusual fatigue, jaw pain, nausea and dizziness before or during a heart attack.

Dubois said there are still tickets left for Saturday’s event, which is unusual. So she hopes more people come out to support the cause.

“We’ve always sold out,” she said. “It’s amazing how the weather has affected things.”
