---- — Northwestern School Corp. officially has a plan in place to make up the year’s missed snow days after the board of education unanimously approved it Thursday.

Superintendent Ryan Snoddy presented a plan to add six days back into the school calendar, in addition to three make-up days already built in and a state waiver for canceled classes Jan. 7. Northwestern students now will be in school on Good Friday, April 18, for an extra hour at the end of the school day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from March 4 through 27 and for another three days at the end of the school year so the last day for students will be June 3.

“I praise our teachers association and principals for the discussions they’ve had,” Snoddy said. “We had a lot of discussion on what’s best for our students and also what’s best to get them prepared for testing.”

With the ISTEP coming up in March and April, teachers will use the extended school days to cover material they may have missed because of the snow days. The middle school and high school will extend each period by a few minutes, and the elementary school is re-formatting its daily schedule to spend the extra block of time on concepts that will be on the ISTEP. For days with extended hours, the middle and high school will hold class from 7:45 a.m. to 3:35 p.m., and the elementary schools will be in session from 9:10 a.m. to 4:35 p.m.

“I hate this whole process because we’re talking about getting them ready for testing. That’s certainly an outcome that can’t be ignored, but there’s more to education than testing,” Snoddy said.

The teachers association signed a memorandum of understanding in support of the extended school days in March, and Snoddy said he is working out details so support staff can get in the appropriate number of hours and receive their regular pay.

Also at the meeting, the board approved the termination of Cami McLeland as corporation treasurer. She had held the position for more than 15 years.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 13 in the high school library.
