---- — The man charged with striking two teens on a moped Sept. 12, killing one, and then leaving the crash site was booked into the Howard County jail Thursday afternoon.
Randall Rector, 58, faces a Class C felony charge of reckless homicide, a C felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing death and a D felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury. A Class C felony carries a penalty of two to eight years in prison; a Class D felony carries a penalty of six months to two years. His bond is set at $15,000.
No date has been set for his arraignment.
The charges were filed in Howard Superior Court 4.
Police say Christian Reede and Dante Brown, both 13, were on a moped heading east on Center Road when they were struck by Rector’s truck as he turned south into the Highland Springs subdivision.
Reede died from his injuries and Brown suffered a broken leg and other injuries. Brown has been released from the hospital and is recovering.
On Saturday, police were called to Rector’s residence on an attempted suicide. They say he admitted in a letter to driving the vehicle that struck the boys.
Crash investigators and detectives served a search warrant at Rector’s residence at 4043 Highland Springs Drive and seized a grey 2006 Ford Escape believed to be the suspect vehicle involved in crash.
