Kokomo police said a boy was badly injured early Monday morning in a small fire in the 500 block of West Park Avenue.
The Kokomo Fire Department was called to an apartment for a medical call, and arrived shortly after 8:35 a.m. to find a boy with third-degree burns, Kokomo Fire Chief Pat O’Neill said.
Maj. Brian Seldon of the Kokomo Police Department said the fire was under investigation and the boy was flown for medical care by Lifeline helicopter. Seldon had no additional information as of Monday afternoon.
Neighbors said the boy, who is around kindergarten age, had been playing with a lighter and caught his clothes on fire. O’Neill confirmed those details.
Seldon said the fire is believed to have been accidental. O’Neill said there was no structural damage to the dwelling where the incident occurred.
