PERU — Police say a 26-year-old Peru man led officers on a foot chase after trying to steal diapers and baby wipes from CVS.
David Ritchie, 10 block of West Riverside Drive, entered the store at the corner of Broadway and Main Street around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. A CVS employee said she observed Ritchie taking diapers and a baby sippy cup, according to court documents.
The employee told police she also observed Ritchie trying to conceal a package of baby wipes by wrapping them in a store advertisement, and he then proceed to walk out the door.
Police said when the employee confronted Ritchie about stealing the items, he threw the diapers and wipes on the floor and pushed the worker before fleeing down Broadway.
Officers saw Ritchie running down the street and told him to stop. He said, “I’m not going to talk to you,” and continued running, court documents state.
Police eventually apprehended Ritchie near the Peru Fire Department on Canal Street. He remains incarcerated at the Miami County Jail.
Ritchie faces felony charges of theft, battery and resisting law enforcement.
Police said the total value of the stolen items came to around $24.
