---- — Kokomo residents decorated the lawn outside Howard County’s Family Services Association on Tuesday in an effort to raise awareness of child abuse.

The Howard County Department of Child Services hosted a “Pinwheels for Prevention” program in conjunction with the national “April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.”

Representatives from the Howard County Prevent Child Abuse Council spoke about the need for parents to step up and be advocates for children.

“I love the fact that we’re partnering with all of the [Department of Child Services] organizations,” Family Service Association Community Liaison Barb Hilton said. “There are so many different people that are working together to keep our kids safe. This event is really about prevention. If we can help prevent abuse from happening to just one child, we can all make a big difference in the lives of children.”

Events will continue on April 15, when the FSA hosts its annual Prevent Child Abuse Conference from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oakbrook Church in Kokomo with a number of guest speakers expected. All sessions are free and open to the public.
