Let the rebuilding process begin for the United Auto Workers Local 685.
UAW Local 685 received site approval Tuesday from the Kokomo City Plan Commission to construct a new building on the site of its previous building at 929 E. Hoffer St. The building was destroyed by a tornado on Nov. 17.
Mawr Design’s plans for the 25,000-square-foot building call for 25 rooms, including a field house equipped with a basketball court, a large event center that can seat nearly 600, private offices, a full kitchen, an exercise area, a senior recreation area, conference room, library and men’s and women’s locker rooms.
A front elevation rendering of the building shows a combination of cultured stone, wood plank siding and horizontal corrugated metal siding. The structure also will prominently feature tinted glass and standing seam metal roofing.
Whittney Beechy, an interior design specialist with Mawr, said plans could also include adding a showroom with Chrysler-related memorabilia, but those plans have not officially been added to the design footprints.
“Basically the design inspiration was taken from Chrysler — we wanted to keep an industrial aesthetic,” she said. “We also wanted to add a modern aesthetic to create a great cohesion between the modern and the industrial. This is a great clean slate for them to work with and the [UAW] board has been great to work with in the design stages.”
Beechy said UAW board members expressed a desire to use eco-friendly materials that were union-made or at least American made.
“That has made the planning a little more difficult, but at the end of the day it’s something they’re very happy with,” Beechy said.
Local UAW leadership was not available for comment on the site plans Wednesday.
