---- — Editor's note: This story has been modified to correct the length of Henry Shell Jr.'s sentence from 11 years to 21 years.

PERU — A 47-year-old Amboy man was sentenced to 21 years in prison last week for neglecting and injuring a 9-month-old baby after he mistakenly hit the child with a metal pipe in 2010.

The boy suffered multiple skull fractures that has left the now 3-year-old child in a wheelchair and “brain dead,” according to prosecutors.

Henry Shell Jr. was found guilty last month of neglecting a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, battery resulting in bodily injury and resisting law enforcement.

Prosecutors said Shell and his wife, Karen, were engaged in a domestic dispute and both coming down off a methamphetamine high at the time of the incident.

Prosecutors said Shell was trying to hit Karen with a metal pipe but missed and struck the baby in the head.

Henry Shell admitted during his testimony he fled into the woods after he found the baby unresponsive. When deputies found him there, he said he struck an officer and tried to flee the scene.

Miami County Circuit Court Judge Tim Spahr handed down a nine-year sentence on the child neglect conviction.

Shell was also given two years for battery and one year for resisting officers. Those sentences will be served concurrently.
