---- — Last year’s Military Foundation 5K run/walk at the Ivy Tech Events Center proved successful for a group of high school students.

The students, who are either a child, grandchild or sibling of a veteran or active service member, received scholarships from money raised in November’s veterans event.

Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, Adjutant General of Indiana, presented the scholarships Wednesday at a ceremony at the Kokomo National Guard Armory.

The November event was held to honor David Neil Simmons, who was killed April 8, 2007 in Iraq.

Simmons was killed when the military vehicle he was in came under attack and was hit by an improvised explosive device.
