Winter storm expected to arrive this afternoon

Winter weather is expected to make its way into Indiana this afternoon into evening, with a mixture of sleet and snow predicted to fall before 4 p.m. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Howard and Tipton counties effective until midnight Friday.

The NWS predicts widespread accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible as the wintry mix turns to snow after 4 p.m. today and continues through the evening. Road surfaces are likely to become icy.

The wintry weather will continue as the extended outlook predicts another cold front will bring another 1 to 2 inches of accumulation to the region by Friday evening. This will be followed by more snow and ice Sunday into Monday.

Temperatures will be bitterly cold starting Tuesday, the NWS said, with daytime temperatures in the teens and overnight temperatures in the single digits.

People should prepare for the winter storm by ensuring they have a winter survival kit in their vehicle. State officials urge anyone who doesn’t need to travel to stay off roads and those who must travel to allow extra time and carry a fully charged cellphone.

For updated information on road conditions, visit GetPrepared.in.gov and click on Indiana Travel Advisory Map or call 800-261-ROAD (7623).

A winter survival kit should include: At least two blankets or a sleeping bag; a flashlight with extra batteries; jumper cables; emergency flares; extra clothing, boots, hats and gloves; a shovel; bottled water and non-perishable food; a first-aid kit and necessary medications; sand or non-clumping cat litter; a cellphone and car charger; and an ice scraper and snow brush.

If you become stranded, do not leave the car unless there is a safe structure nearby; run the engine 10 minutes every hour to stay warm – an idling car uses one gallon of gas an hour; tie a brightly colored cloth to the car for rescuers to see; light a flare or turn on a flashlight to let others know you are stranded; make sure the exhaust pipe is free of any blockage to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning; and keep hydrated by drinking the water in your survival kit – don’t eat snow because it lowers your body temperature.
