Indiana delegation urges federal aid

---- — KOKOMO (AP) — The state congressional delegation is asking President Barack Obama to approve Indiana’s request for a federal major disaster declaration for Howard County because of damage caused by last month’s tornadoes and severe storms.

Indiana’s two senators and nine representatives all signed the letter sent Thursday, saying it is clear the recovery is beyond the capabilities and resources of the state of Indiana. Gov. Mike Pence on Wednesday asked that the Federal Emergency Management Agency approve grants and low-interest loans to help homeowners and business in and around Kokomo.

The request by Pence said 191 homes in Howard County were destroyed or have major damage, with about 800 more with less-severe damage. The National Weather Service said two tornadoes with winds of at least 120 mph hit Kokomo on Nov. 17.
