Downtown library closing Sept. 27

Temporary location at Columbian School

The main branch of the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library will close on Sept. 27 to begin the process of a planned $3.6 million renovation.

Charles Joray, director of the library system, told members of the library board the last day the main branch will be open is on Sunday, Sept. 27. He said the move to the temporary location at the former Columbian School will begin Sept. 28.

The main branch closing will not affect the South and Russiaville branches of the library.

Joray said Guyer the Mover Inc. will move shelving and books to the Columbian School, and the Howard County Sheriff Department’s inmate work crew will be hired to move the furniture.

The move of the books and shelving is expected to take 13 days. Joray said the temporary location should be open to the public by mid-to-late October.

Joray said Guyer the Mover will be paid $2,600 for each day of the move, and the inmate work crew is paid $45 per hour.

The cost of the move will be paid from the Library Improvement Revolving Fund (LIRF).

Until the Columbian School location is open, Joray said the third bookmobile will be parked at the main branch from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday from 2 to 5:30 p.m.

The library board is leasing the Columbian School, 1234 N. Courtland Ave., from Kokomo-Center Schools for $1 per month. The school closed at the end of the 2008-09 school year. The library will pay all utility, custodial and general maintenance costs.

The library will conduct a public auction Oct. 31 to sell all the unused equipment from the main branch.

The library board approved the transfer of $2 million from LIRF to pay for the renovation of the main library.

Joray said the transfer gives the authorization to spend the money on the renovation work, the move to a temporary location and the lease of space.
