A water main break early Thursday will close Washington Street until Saturday between West Taylor and West Jefferson streets.
The city already had planned to mill and resurface Jackson Street at Washington for a separate project this week. Instead, Indiana American Water is in the process of performing work to repair the main, which broke between Jackson and Taylor streets, and will later have asphalt laid in that area.
The street is expected to be under repair until noon on Saturday, city engineer Carey Stranahan said.
Indiana American Water, which responded to the break, was assisted by city crews in identifying what parts of the road needed to be blocked off. Because Indiana American Water and the city share a contractor, Stranahan said the city will mill the road as planned and that E&B Paving lay the asphalt.
While the road closure will be an inconvenience, Stranahan said the timing was actually ideal with work already expected to be done on the road over the next couple of days.
“The timing of it actually worked out pretty good,” he said.
