As families prepare for a new school year, the cost of new binders, backpacks and notebooks can be daunting, so several organizations have stepped in to offer free school supplies for those in need.
Local unions, the Salvation Army, Chrysler, Indiana Health Center and United Way of Howard County will hold school supply giveaways from July 28 to 31 at The Crossing, 1234 N. Courtland Ave.
Howard County families are invited to bring proof of identification, proof of income and expenses and proof of public assistance for the last 30 days to pick up some school supplies. The schedule is as follows:
•	Last name beginning with S to Z, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. July 28;
•	Last name beginning with A to E, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. July 29;
•	Last name beginning with F to K, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. July 30; and
•	Last name beginning with L to R and anyone who cannot make it earlier in the week, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. July 31.
For Tipton County families, Windfall United Methodist Church, 205 S. Independence St., Tipton, is hosting a school supply giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon July 26.
Details are still pending on free school supplies available in Miami County.
