TIPTON — A Tipton County resident active with the Lion’s Club died as a result of injuries received in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday.

After efforts to resuscitate him were exhausted, Robert C. Bills, 88, Tipton, was pronounced dead at 2:29 p.m. at the intersection of Division Road and North Main Street.

Bills died as a result of massive head and chest injuries, according to Tipton County Coroner Bob Nichols.

Bills was driving a 1999 GMC Sierra pickup truck that was struck by a 2000 Navistar International semi-tractor trailer driven by Roger A. Meyer, 51, Monticello.

Bills’ wife, Joyce, 85, was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital. Meyer was not injured in the accident.

The couple was involved with the Lion’s Club and the Tipton community for many years.

Witnesses say Bills stopped at North Main Street and then proceeded into the path of the truck, which was eastbound on Division Road, according to the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Assisting at the scene were Tipton City police and fire departments, Cicero Township and Jackson Township fire departments, Indiana State Police, Sharpsville marshal, Seals Ambulance and Tipton County Emergency Management Agency.
