A Taylor High School Academic Super Bowl team continued the school’s tradition of high performance with a runner-up finish in the state competition last weekend.
Taylor’s English and fine arts teams advanced from the regional to the state Academic Super Bowl, held at Purdue University. The English team, made up of students Kristen Comstock, Molly Peterson and Fred Durham, took second place. THS has had four teams take first place and four teams take second place at the state competition since 2010.
“They did a wonderful job,” said Steve Dishon, who coached Taylor’s English team. “They do the work. They’re dedicated to this, and they take it very seriously.”
Taylor’s fine arts team was among state finalists recognized at the competition. The Academic Super Bowl recognizes state champions, runners up, third place and three finalists. Taylor’s fine arts team members included Heidi Bonus, Brandon Nguyen, Nick Nguyen, Kyle Orzech and Taylor Pemberton, coached by MaryAnne Dishon, the head coach for Taylor’s Academic Super Bowl teams.
Eastern Sr. High School also had a math team advance from the regional competition, and they were among the state finalists.
Academic Super Bowl competitions, which are sponsored by Purdue University and the Indiana Association of School Principals, consist of six academic categories. A group of three students completes 25 multiple choice questions, with the option to switch in two new team members after 12 questions.
“I am extremely proud of all of our academic team members and coaches,” said THS principal Eric Hartman. “The fact that our teams have excelled at the state competition year after year is a testament to the outstanding instructors and programs at Taylor Community School Corp. One school doesn’t win at this level by accident.”
