Miami Co. commissioners: Employees waste time online

Officials send email saying computers are being monitored.

Peru — The Miami County commissioners say they want to crack down on county employees wasting time online after a report monitoring county computers revealed employees spend hours on social media and news websites.

The commissioners recently asked the county’s information technology department to start tracking employees’ Internet usage. The department issued its first report Monday showing hundreds of hits within a week on sites like Facebook and MSN.

Commissioner Josh Francis said some employees were spending an excessive amount of work time on non-work-related sites and the problem needs to be addressed.

“Offices that have been complaining about not having enough help — now we know why they need more help,” he said Monday. “We’re paying employees to do a job ... I have no problem with people checking email or reading an article, but spending hours playing games is uncalled for.”

The IT department issued an email to all county employees Monday that said the commissioners would begin routinely monitoring Internet usage and start cracking down on workers wasting time surfing the Web.

“We’re going to put a stop to this,” said Commissioner Jerry Hamman.

IT Director John Evans said he would issue weekly reports to the commissioners that will “show us who is guilty and who is not guilty.”

He pointed out some departments use Facebook and other social media sites for work-related research and the numbers don’t necessarily indicate how much time employees spend online.
