Peru — A jury trial started Monday for a 47-year-old Amboy man who is accused of neglecting a 9-month-old baby.

Henry Shell Jr. faces charges of battery, domestic battery, resisting law enforcement and neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.

Shell was arrested in 2010 after deputies said he had a physical altercation with his wife, the infant’s mother, when the child was struck by a blunt-force object.

Emergency responders found the child not breathing and unresponsive. The baby was flown by helicopter to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne where he had surgery for multiple skull fractures.

When officers attempted to talk with Shell after the incident, he allegedly fled the scene.

A Converse town marshal and Miami County sheriff’s deputy found Shell and tried to arrest him, but officers said he resisted arrest and started fighting.

Officers used a Taser gun to get Shell under control and arrest him.

The trial is scheduled to run until Thursday, according to court documents.
