VERBATIM: Weekend weather could lead to flooding, says INDOT

Indianapolis — The Indiana Department of Transportation is warning drivers to be on the lookout for high water and potentially slick road conditions due to changing weather patterns in the forecast.

Several inches of snow from the past week are now melting because of the above-freezing temperatures, and several inches of rain forecasted through this weekend are increasing the potential for high water on roadways.

INDOT crews will patrol state roads and post high water signs or close roads when needed, but motorists need to practice extreme caution. If you come across a flooded roadway, turn around. Never drive through standing water. According to the National Weather Service, most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Six inches of standing water is enough to stall a car, and a foot of water will float many vehicles.

Temperatures are predicted to fall Sunday night and into Monday, increasing the chances for freezing on roadways. Any roadways remaining wet from precipitation and areas of high water could become slick when temperatures again fall below freezing.

INDOT crews are prepared to keep interstates, U.S. highways and state roads as safe as possible, but drivers should be aware of potentially difficult road conditions throughout the weekend. Know the conditions before you head out the door, and avoid non-essential travel when road conditions are difficult.

Drivers can monitor road conditions and traffic alerts across the state at any time. Visit www.TrafficWise.IN.gov or dial toll-free 800-261-ROAD (7623) for INDOT’s TrafficWise Traveler Information Service.
