Snow emergency declared

It took Old Man Winter a few months to arrive, but he arrived with a knock-out punch.

Snow started falling in central Indiana early Tuesday and by mid-morning the National Weather Service had issued a blizzard warning for areas north of Indianapolis.

The weather service was predicting as much as 12 to 15 inches of snow in the Kokomo area and, with winds gusting to 35 mph, travel was not recommended.

The Howard County commissioners declared a snow emergency at 1 p.m. for all area of the county except within the city limits of Kokomo, Greentown and Russiaville, according to Commissioner Brad Bagwell.

When a snow emergency is issued, only emergency vehicles are to be traveling on streets and roads.

According to the emergency order issued by the commissioners, “all county roads are hereby closed until further notice to every person and motor vehicle except those who perform the essential functions of local government and public health and safety.”

Howard County government employees were sent home from work at noon and employees at Delphi and Chrysler were also being told not to report to work Tuesday afternoon.

The county road crews were pulled back in at 3 p.m.

“After that the crews will be called back in and we’ll wait to see what the wind does,” Bagwell said.

The towns of Russiaville and Greentown also declared snow emergencies.

Both Tipton and Miami counties issued snow emergencies early Tuesday morning.

Tipton County Sheriff Frank Fritch said a snow emergency was declared in the county and city of Tipton.

Fritch said only emergency vehicles are to be traveling on city streets and county roads during the emergency.

“The Tipton County Highway Department is responding to emergencies only,” he said. “Right now we’re only trying to clear stranded vehicles from the roads.”
