Kokomo police officers tracked a suspect through the snow Monday to a crawl space near Garden Square Apartments, before arresting a 34-year-old Kokomo man on several charges.
Capt. Mike Wheeler of the KPD’s Drug Interdiction Unit said Jonathan Sellers was stopped by officers who suspected he was on a no-trespass list for the public housing units.
Sellers, however, ran from the officers northbound. Officers quickly converged on a house in the 900 block of East Laguna Street after finding footprints in the snow leading to a crawlspace under the home.
After forming a perimeter around the house, officers knocked on the door but didn’t receive an answer. Several minutes later, however, a 16-year-old female exited the house unharmed, officers entered the residence, and arrested Sellers. Reports from the KPD did not explain how Sellers made it from the crawlspace into the house.
Police said Sellers initially told the female not to answer the door while police were outside, but later allowed her to exit.
Sellers faces a Class B felony burglary charge, a Class D felony charge of confinement and a misdemeanor resisting law enforcement charge, Lt. Dave Galloway reported.
Police looking into Kokomo man’s death
Kokomo police and Kokomo Fire Department medics responded to a report of a man lying unresponsive in a northside Kokomo parking lot shortly before noon Monday.
Arriving at the scene, they found Robert Eriksen, 59, 2000 block of North Philips, deceased. Initial reports were that county coroners officials found no signs of foul play, however, the case remains under investigation, Kokomo police Lt. Don Whitehead said in a statement Monday.
Eriksen lived in an apartment in a building on the property where his body was found, Whitehead said. He was discovered around 11:26 a.m. by a man and a woman who were staying with him in his residence, he added. An autopsy is scheduled today at Howard Regional Health System.
Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call Whitehead at (765) 456-7248, the Kokomo Police Hotline at (765) 456-7017, or callers can qualify for a cash reward by calling Central Indiana Crime Stoppers at (800) 922-5378.
Dropped phone leads teen on expedition
A Kokomo teenager blamed a dropped cell phone for a trip through three yards on West Alto Road Friday evening.
Neighbors in the 3000 block of West Alto reported significant damage when Braden J. Williams, 17, 5600 block of Princeton Drive, drove off the right side of the roadway headed westbound.
Howard County Sheriff deputies said Williams hit a mailbox then continued through the yard of 3016 W. Alto, hit a driveway culvert and narrowly missed a tree at 3104 W. Alto before hitting a stump and a basketball goal at 3114 W. Alto. He came to rest in a snow-filled ditch.
Altogether, Williams traveled 436 feet from the time he left the roadway, deputies said.
According to the accident report, Williams said he didn’t know how fast he was traveling when he dropped his cell phone and bent over to pick it up, but said he was concerned about getting stuck in one of the yards, and tried to coast through the yards without accelerating. A high rate of speed was listed as a factor in the accident, along with the dropped cell phone.
