Marching Titans prepare for regionals

Seven area bands hope to win semistate spot today

By DANIELLE RUSH

Taylor Marching Titans director Mark Snelson hopes a first-place finish last weekend will give his band the confidence boost it needs to get to the semistate competition.

Today, the Titans will be among seven Kokomo-area bands competing in the Indiana State School Music Association regional contest, hoping to earn one of 20 spots at the Oct. 24 semistate competition.

The music organization hosts regional sites in the north and south, and the top 10 from each class at each regional will continue to the semistate, where the top 10 in each class will be chosen to compete in the state finals at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Snelson said with 16 bands competing for the 10 northern spots from the Lafayette Jefferson regional, he thinks the 38-member Marching Titans have a good chance of moving on.

“We feel pretty good as far as where we are and where we can be by this Saturday,” he said. “This weekend is going to be telling of where we stand as, hopefully, we move into the semistate.”

Bands from Eastern and Lewis Cass will join Taylor in Class D at the Lafayette Jefferson regional.

The Marching Titans’ show is called “Variations on a Korean Folk Song,” and Snelson said it is a difficult piece of music.

“It’s pretty complex. It gets tougher and tougher as the show progresses,” he said, adding that it would be a hard piece to play sitting down in concert band.

“Standing up and moving and doing all sorts of funky stuff along with that makes it a bigger challenge for the kids,” he said.

After the first-place finish at the Plymouth contest, Snelson said the band spent this week cleaning and preparing for regionals.

Snelson said the group’s goal is to go to state, but he hopes the students learn more than music.

“Certainly to me more important than the music is all the things that go into it, the teamwork, punctuality, work ethic, leadership and all the social skills that are going to help them beyond band.”
