NHS principal takes job in Lafayette

Assistant principal Kristen Bilkey to take over on July 1.

Northwestern High School Principal Al Remaly announced he is leaving the district this summer to start a new job at Harrison High School in Lafayette.

The Northwestern Board of School Trustees appointed Kristen Bilkey as the new principal of effective July 1, according to a release from the district. She has served as the high school assistant principal for the past two years.

Remaly will assume the principal position at Harrison High School.

Superintendent Ryan Snoddy praised both Remaly and Bilkey for their recent work at Northwestern High School.

Snoddy said, “While the community will miss the leadership of Mr. Remaly, I look forward to the leadership that Mrs. Bilkey will provide to continue our culture in our schools where ‘excellence in education is a tradition.’”

She has built strong relationships with students, parents and staff in the past two years, Snoddy said.

Bilkey has previously served as an assistant principal at both Sycamore Elementary School and Maple Crest Middle School in Kokomo. She has also done extensive work in the areas of assessment, data collection and progress monitoring, and she worked with the International Baccalaureate program.

As the assistant principal at Northwestern High School, Bilkey has been instrumental in leading the school corporation through the AdvancED Accreditation Process, which will culminate with an on-site visit in October.

She has also been integral in developing the district’s teacher evaluation model.

Snoddy said Kristen Bilkey has a vision that includes success for all students. She will be able to provide collaborative insight and leadership to the staff that helps maintain a tradition of excellence in the high school.

Bilkey received her bachelor’s degree from Purdue University in 1994 and her master’s in educational administration in 1998. She is married to Matthew Bilkey, a major with the Indiana State Police, and they have two children, seventh-grader Kate and fifth-grader Jack.
