Taylor Schools’ Magers to resign

Superintendent says he will look for new challenges.

— Taylor Community Schools Superintendent John Magers will leave the district at the end of June to pursue new challenges, he said Monday.

The school board approved his resignation at its most recent meeting.

Members of the board could not be reached Monday afternoon for comment.

The decision came without much warning, but Magers said it’s something he’s been considering for a while.

He said very little about why he’s stepping down, though.

It wasn’t because of any issues with the school district or school board, he said. Both were great to work with, he added.

“I felt like it was time,” he said. “You know when the time has come to take on new challenges.”

He said the ever-increasing constraints placed on schools today played a minor role in his decision. It’s a tough time to be a superintendent in Indiana, he said.

Magers said he still hopes the Indiana legislature will slow down for a minute and take a good look at what it’s doing to public schools by taking public school dollars to fund charter schools and private school vouchers.

“Financially, it’s very difficult right now,” he said. “It’s very hard to make ends meet.”

And it gets harder every day to “make the things happen that you would like to see happen for kids,” he said.

Magers has been at Taylor for five years. He spent three years as superintendent for South Henry School Corp. before working at Taylor. He has been in education for 39 years.

Whether he will stay in education remains to be seen.

Magers doesn’t have another job lined up yet. He said he has some other “irons in the fire.” He’s looking at positions both in and out of education and hasn’t ruled out the possibility of retiring, he said.
